Investment

We often act for start ups, management buy outs or companies that are looking to develop new products where in each case substantial funds are required to take the project forwards.  While we may be able to point you towards grant giving bodies often the sums are so large and the risk so high that only equity investment is really viable.

Some clients are able to secure funding themselves, often from others in the same industry and we can then help them put appropriate investment and shareholders’ agreements in place, adjust the articles to fit the new situation and draw up the resolutions and other corporate documents necessary to give effect to the investment.  We can also advise clients looking for investment on the sort of terms they should expect and some of the options open to them.

For clients who have not yet secured funding we can help them put together business summaries in an appropriate style to send to investors and develop likely Q&As for investment presentations.  We also help with introductions to venture capital funds and are increasingly receiving approaches from other law firms with clients looking for investment opportunities which we are happy to pass along.

Some clients have particular issues which may make them harder to fund – perhaps the technology is very early stage or the sums required are outside the normal funding range for angels or vcs in that sector.  Again we may be able to help.  We have associates with invaluable connections with funds in the Far East and the US that can take on larger investments and others with expertise in raising debt capital or investment from the London private equity market and can introduce clients to these opportunities too.
